Fire on Board 2 – Swiss mode classic online tournament was conducted in lichess.org from 25 to 28 April, 2020.

A six round tournament in which twenty eight players battled to outplay their opponent and horn their skills was thrilling to watch with some nice games and many upsets. Nithyan S emerged the winner with 5.5 points. ACM Rishikesh S A, the fifth seed in the tournament, fought well and secured a draw against the champion and is the only player with a positive score against the champion.

Nithyan’s technique again proved superior to other participants and his opponents preparing against him using the games published led to some exciting fights. Some boards were on fire right from the opening where Jahnvi Asok played the Evans Gambit to complicate the game, but her opponent Manav A Rejith, who lost against her in Evans Gambit in the previous tournament, was prepared to meet this but some slips from Manav cost him the game. This is the advantage of classical games as it gives players ample time to think and fight to the best of their abilities and to prepare against their opponents which promotes disciplined learning and widening of their knowledge base.

Congratulations to Nithyan!
Congratulations to Shreyas Arun and Parteev Sunil who finished behind the champion with 5 points.

Italian game and Sicilian defense are the most played openings in this tournament. Akhil Sajeev played an irregular opening known as the Polish Opening or the Orangutan (1. b4).

The final round was entertaining as players were all prepared to fight tooth and nail for a win.
